Blockchain meets Energy

Given a rapidly changing energy system from an analog world of a highly centralized, fossil fuel-based generation and transmission system to a new paradigm of decarbonisation, decentralization, and digitalization, the the two-days event "Blockchain meets Energy" on 14th and 15th November shed light on possible and already implemented blockchain applications. Impressive international use cases from Estonia, Australia, Chile or Germany were outlined: Public service operations; certification and tracking schemes; distributed and microgrid solutions; IoT; as well as free, open-source scalable blockchain platforms specifically designed for the energy sector’s regulatory, operational, and market needs. Attendees agreed that blockchains might add a new level of digital integrity, security and allow the grid to advance to a highly automated system based on smart contracts. Speakers came from Fraunhofer FIT, Guardtime, PowerLedger, the Energy Web Foundation (EWF), Phineal, GlobalGrid, the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) as well as the Mexican Regulatory Commission (CRE) and the GIZ Blockchain Lab.
The two-day event was organized by CRE, the German-Mexican Energy Partnership, DKTI Solar and the GIZ Blockchain Lab.

Marcelino Madrigal, Commissioner (CRE), and Marita Brömmelmeier, Country Director (GIZ).

Julia Manske, Data Innovation and Privacy Specialist, and Ivo Lohmus, Vice-President (Guardtime).
