Mexico. - On December 1st and 2nd the Poblano Energy Forum 2021, organized by the Energy Agency of the State of Puebla, was held. The objective of the event was to discuss and exchange experiences and opinions regarding innovation and financing trends to enhance a more sustainable and inclusive energy sector in Mexico.
During the forum, the German-Mexican Energy Partnership (EP), participated together with specialists from the British Embassy and the consulting firm Sherpas in the panel "International cooperation towards sustainable development", in order to discuss cooperation strategies in the energy sector.
The panel began with the presentation of the guidelines, the sustainable development objectives, and the strategies that each of the organizations is carrying out to enhance climate change mitigation through the decarbonization of the energy matrix. Likewise, the panelists also shared some lessons learned regarding the role of cooperation in the energy transition.
Gonzalo Diaz, founder of Sherpas, spoke about the challenges involved in implementing climate change adaptation and mitigation projects and referred to the projects his organization is currently developing, which focus on green hydrogen, biomass and solar agrovoltaic energy in cooperation with Japan.
For their part, Andrea Larios and Diana Oropeza, analysts of the British Embassy's clean energy program, mentioned that in order to promote a low-carbon industry it is necessary to develop climate change and resilience strategies for the design of training courses that address the context of the energy industry in Mexico.
Marco Hüls, coordinator of the EP, shared that in Germany the acceptance of the energy transition was achieved thanks to the participation of the federal government, subnational governments, the private sector, civil society, and academia, so he highlighted the importance of a broad consensus involving all society.
Finally, the panelists discussed some key opportunities and challenges, such as: gender mainstreaming; the creation of a clear regulatory framework that seeks to promote the transition; the formation and training of human capital; the inclusion of all sectors; and the opportunities for international green funds.
With its participation, the EP enhances dialogue and cooperation on topics regarding digitization, decentralization, decarbonization and democratization to achieve a just and sustainable energy transition.
